What is Science of Mind?
Science of Mind, the philosophy underpinning our work, is called a science because it identifies and studies universal principals or laws of nature that are operating in our life whether we think about it or not. Sort of like gravity, these principals are just always there, operating impersonally and reliably. We can learn to use these principals to improve the quality of our life, to bring more happiness and satisfaction into our day to day existence; we can use them to become better stewards of our planet, to be better neighbors in our world community. Science of Mind is also a philosophy because it examines our relationship to Life itself; it is a religion because it talks to us about God, that Ultimate Reality regardless of what name we choose to give it (Spirit, Jehovah, Brahman, Allah). Our founder, Ernest Holmes, tells us that "the Science of Mind is the study of Life and the nature of the laws of thought; the conception that we live in a spiritual Universe; that God is in, through and around and for us." Ernest Holmes
Science of Mind teaches us to see how our thoughts and beliefs are related to the life we're living. Life is, in some very real sense, a mirror of the things we focus on, think about, give our energy and attention to. If there are aspects of our life that we want to change, we first need to change our thinking. We take seriously the notion that we are "recreated through the renewing of our minds." With Mahatma Gandhi, we say that "Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I shall have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it…" And with Jesus, we say "It is done unto you as you believe."
Science of Mind is not a creed. It contains neither dogma nor decree. It encompasses no system of sin and punishment, no rules of conduct. Instead, Science of Mind sets forth a simple opportunity, one that offers no contradiction to either reason or common sense. Any person, by deliberately applying the basic principle of cause and effect, can influence the conditions of his or her life.
Science of Mind is not a cult. Ernest Holmes was clear that the ideas of the Science of Mind were not original to him. He was a synthesizer, a mystical correlator, bringing universal spiritual principles to a practical, usable and repeatable format. He was able to see and teach, in terms everyone could understand, the core Truths at the heart of all the great spiritual traditions. Ernest emphasized the importance of individual spiritual experience as well as spiritual convictions. As did the Buddha, he encouraged others to try out the teachings and see if they worked for them. "I would rather see a student of this Science prove its principle than to have him repeat all the words of wisdom that have ever been uttered. It is far easier to teach the Truth than to practice it. But the practice of Truth is personal to each, and in the long run no one can live our life for us. To each is given what he needs and the gifts of heaven come alike to all. How we shall use these gifts is all that matters." Ernest Holmes
